Achatina (Lissachatina) fulica (Bowdich, 1822) East African Snail
Achatina fulica - affordable and widespread species of African snail.
They were presented by many countries and accidentally become serious pests.
Habitat - Originally: East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania
Imported: southern Ethiopia, southern Somalia, northern Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Morocco and West Africa, Ghana.
Life expectancy - 10 years, usually 5-7.
Size:
The average length of an adult shell is 12 cm with a diameter of 6 cm in exceptional cases, sink could grow to 20 cm long, but it is very unlikely, especially at home. Most of the growth achieved during the first 6 months, but continue to continue to grow.
Weight: Can create and more than 600 g.
Identification: There are a wide variety of shell and body polymorphism in snails.
Achatina fulica - hermaphrodite. Adult Achatina fulik have male and female sexual organs. Male organs mature at least a year, sometimes become sexually mature at five months. After mating, they were able to preserve sperm, making successive oviposition, possibly after a single mating. May be delayed several hundred eggs per clutch. Their color is yellowish-white, with a somewhat oval shape and has a size of 4-5.5 mm.
Size Achatina fulica may take up to 20 cm in length and 12 cm in maximum diameter. In general, there are seven - nine flourishes, and rarely as much as ten flourishes. Achatina fulica prefers an environment that is rich in calcium carbonate, such as limestone, marl, and where there is an abundance of cement or concrete. These calcium-rich areas of the shell fulik adults tend to be thicker and opaque.
Although fulik coloration can be variable due to environmental conditions and diet in general is a reddish-brown with light yellow, vertical stripes. Another resembles a light coffee color. Colors fade with age in the early whorls, appear to be less intense. And it becomes darker and more vibrant in the new stage.
The body snail Achatina fulica has two pairs of tentacles, one short lower pair, which are tactile and charming, and one longer upper pair of eyes. The body is wet, slimy and elastic. Body color may or spotty-brown or more rarely a pale cream color.
Shell form in fuliki may change somewhat, even in the same colony, from thin to moderately obese. Wider specimens with the same number of flourishes tend to be shorter in the length of the shell.
Eggs Achatina fulica - 30-1000 White / Yellow eggs, 4-5mm in diameter, up to 6 times a year.
Achatina fulica little more sensitive to moist environment than other African snails and die if conditions are too wet.
